One Wrong Glue Line Kills Your Side Tuck

A side tuck only works while one long edge stays alive. Glue that edge by accident and the structure becomes a pretty dead strip with nowhere for the tag to enter.

The side mouth is the whole point. Mark it before you open the adhesive, because wet glue makes the wrong edge look tempting.

The strip is burnished flat and beautifully aligned. Then the tall tag arrives and discovers there is no side opening at all.

Two structures hide behind the same silhouette. A side band is a bridge anchored only at its short ends. An L-side stop is a rail plus a bottom shelf. The first guides lightly; the second gives the insert somewhere to land.

Before opening the glue, put the actual insert under the strip and pull it the way the page will be used. That one movement decides which edge stays alive, where a bottom stop may be needed, and whether the binding is already in the way.

A sideways pull also makes paper flex and rub laterally, but it does not always cross the grain. Grain direction depends on how the actual sheet was made and cut. Gently bend the strip and insert in both directions, then rotate a test offcut ninety degrees. Use the orientation that flexes and slides with less resistance; handmade and heavily textured papers may behave less predictably than machine-made stock.

Write “OPEN” on the edge the hand will use.

This channel suits receipts, tall tags, bookmarks, prayer cards, narrow journaling cards, and page-edge ephemera that should peek sideways instead of dropping from above.

The live edge gets no glue

For an L-side stop, glue the bottom shelf and the far long rail. For a side band, glue only the two short ends. Slide release paper through the channel while it sets, then test the tag with the page held upright.

Choose bridge or rail before adhesive decides the entry direction for you.

Side entry fits when

A tall insert should peek from the page side and be removed without bending the page or digging under a pocket front.

First channel test

Cut a 1.5 x 5.5 in trial strip, mark the live edge, choose bridge or L-stop, guard the mouth, and slide one blank tag through its full path. Stop if the strip bows or the resistance changes.

Choose a pocket when

The insert is heavy, wider than the page can support, or handled often enough to need more than a side channel.

Test friction on both paper faces.

Bridge or rail strip

Start with sturdy paper 1.25 to 2 in wide and roughly 60 to 80 percent of the page height. Back soft book paper before asking it to survive repeated side pulls. Bend the actual strip in both directions and rub a blank tag across both faces; orientation and surface finish matter more than a generic grain assumption.

Trial insert

A tall tag, receipt, bookmark, or narrow card. Match the final insert's width and stiffness while you size the channel.

Adhesive

Dry tape or a restrained glue line on the stop edges only. Wide glue narrows the channel and gives the insert a rough shoulder to scrape against.

Release paper

A slick guard pulled through the side mouth while adhesive sets. Pull it free yourself to check that the opening stayed clear before the tag enters.

Pull cue

A visible side edge, rounded tag corner, tiny tab, or small notch added only after the channel passes the slide test.

Pressure scrap

Clean scrap paper for pressing the stop edges without smearing glue into the live mouth.

The band version is a bridge. The L-stop version is a rail and shelf. They fail in different ways when the live edge is glued.
Side band: top and bottom are anchors; the long side stays open for sliding. L-side stop: far rail plus bottom shelf stop the insert without sealing the entry. Release paper: pull it through before loading the tag to catch glue creep early. Grain check: bend an offcut in both directions and rotate the trial strip if one orientation fights the side pull.

Size the exposed edge for a fingertip.

  1. A 1.5 x 5.5 in strip works on many 5 x 8 in journal pages, but the insert decides the final width.
  2. Let the strip cover one-third to one-half of the insert width. If the strip covers more, the reader loses the visible pull edge.
  3. Begin with about 1/4 in between the live mouth and page edge for an outward pull, then increase it until the real tab, curl, or ribbon clears during a page turn.
  4. Leave at least a fingertip width of exposed insert on the pull side. A side tuck that requires tweezers is too deep for daily use.
  5. Keep side tucks away from the spine pressure zone. A stiff insert beside the gutter makes the page fight the binding.
  6. If the insert is heavier than the page, stop and choose a pocket with more support.

The live edge and stop edge cannot trade jobs.

Side band option Glue the top short edge and bottom short edge only This creates a bridge. The insert slides behind the strip, so the long edges must stay dry and low.
L-side-stop option Glue the long edge opposite the entry opening plus the bottom edge This makes one rail and one shelf. It is stronger than a band, but only if the live side is left open.
Pull direction If the insert pulls from the outer page edge, that outer edge must remain unglued Mark this on the back before gluing. One wrong adhesive line turns the side tuck into dead decoration.
No-glue path Keep the sliding path dry, flat, and free of raised embellishments Raised scraps, thread knots, and glue beads make the card scrape or bow during every pull.
Visible side cue Leave one clear edge, tab, notch, or rounded corner for the hand Decorative strips near the mouth should not look more pullable than the insert itself.

Turn the strip over before deciding which way is “right.”

  1. Choose a tag and decide where the reader will pull it from: outer page edge, inner page edge, or a slight diagonal side mouth.
  2. Choose side band when the piece only needs light pressure. Choose L-side stop when the insert needs one wall and a bottom shelf.
  3. Cut the strip, test its bend in both directions, and rotate a scrap version if it resists. Then soften exposed corners so they do not shave the insert edge.
  4. Dry-fit the tag under the strip and mark the live entry edge on the back in pencil.
  5. For a side band, mark only the top and bottom short ends as glue zones.
  6. For an L-side stop, mark the long edge opposite the live mouth plus the bottom shelf.
  7. Apply a narrow adhesive line only to the marked stop zones. Keep glue away from the sliding path.
  8. Press the strip through clean scrap paper, then slide release paper through the channel immediately.
  9. Pull the release paper out while the adhesive has set enough to hold shape but before it cures around the guard.
  10. Let the channel dry empty so the mouth does not harden around a trapped insert.
  11. Slide the tag in and out with the page lying flat, then repeat with the page held upright. The pull should stay even in both positions without polishing the live edge.
  12. Turn the page while the tag is loaded. If the side edge catches the facing page, shorten the insert, move the tuck outward, or switch to a top tuck.
  13. Add a tab, label, lace, or torn-paper trim only after the side mouth still works.

A bowed tag or flexing page means the mouth is too tight or the wrong edge has been glued.

A bow, sag, or polished edge names the failure.

Wrong edge glued What it means The planned pull edge is sealed. Rebuild; cutting the mouth open usually leaves a ragged adhesive shoulder that keeps catching paper.
Page bows What it means The channel is too tight, the insert is too thick, or the tuck sits too close to the spine. Rebuild wider or move the structure outward.
Insert slips sideways What it means A loose side band is not giving enough stop. Add a tiny outside stop tab or rebuild as an L-side stop with a bottom shelf.
Side band sags open What it means The strip is too soft, too long, or carrying too much load. Back the strip, shorten the span, or move the insert to a belly band or pocket.
Receipt curls in the channel What it means The channel is too tight for flexible paper or the pull angle is twisting it. Use a flatter slip, widen the mouth, or choose a top tuck where gravity helps.
Strip tears What it means The strip is too weak for repeated pulling, or the pull cue asks fingers to tug at one thin corner. Back the strip or use stronger paper.

Repair the stop, not the live mouth.

  1. If the tag drops out, add one tiny stop tab at the lower open side. Do not glue along the live edge to fake security.
  2. If the insert bows the page, trim it only when the content allows it; otherwise rebuild the channel wider.
  3. If the insert twists, add a second narrow guide strip outside the channel, leaving the existing mouth open.
  4. If a decorative strip looks like the pull cue, either quiet the decoration or make the real side edge more visible. Do not make the reader test both.
  5. If the entry edge is glued shut, remake the strip with the live edge marked before any adhesive appears.

Let two paper weights choose two different structures.

Make one side band and one L-side stop on the same scrap page. Linda Matthews of Creative Art'nSoul gave a wide book-spine piece a second job by gluing it inside the cover as a side pocket; she notes that the same narrow piece could also work as a bookmark. Use the same blank tag in both of your samples, stand the page up, and keep the structure that releases it without warping the sheet.

Repeat the test once with a limp receipt and once with a stiffer tag. If the two papers prefer different structures, let the real insert choose the build instead of forcing one side tuck to hold everything.
